If you have found yourself in the position of having to rehome your dog, we know how difficult and painful a decision this must have been to come to. Please be assured we are not here to judge you or your reasons why. We're here to help.

Before you decide to give up your dog

You may or may not be aware of the support offering we have available for dog owners facing hard times. Depending on your reasons for having to rehome your dog, we may be able to support you in other ways. These include but are not limited to:

Provision of dog care essentials, such as nutritious food, bedding and equipment
Training advice for behavioural issues

If you’re considering rehoming your dog, get in touch.

We know this isn’t an easy decision to make. Our compassionate and helpful team will listen to your concerns. We won’t judge. We’re here to help you make the best decision for you and your dog.

If we can help you keep them by your side, we’ll offer solutions. If together, we decide that rehoming is the best option, we’ll decide with you how this will happen and talk you through all elements of the process. This could mean that your dog will come into one of our rescue centres or be enrolled onto our Home from Home® scheme and will stay with you whilst we find them a new home.

We’re here to help with a blended rehoming approach that’s all about finding the best solution for both you and your dog.

Home from Home®: If it’s suitable and in the best interest of your dog, they can stay in the comfort of their current home while we work with you to find their new family.

In Our Centres: In some cases, we may decide the best option is to bring your dog into one of our centres, where they’ll receive all the love and care they need while we search for their next forever home.

When you enquire about rehoming, we’ll talk through every option with you to ensure we make the right choice for your dog and your situation. Together, we’ll make their next chapter as positive as possible.

Meet&Match® rehoming process

Once we have got to know your dog, we’ll begin their Meet&Match® journey.

This is our science backed rehoming process that matches our dogs with the prospective adopters that best meet their individual needs. It gives both dog and adopter the best chance of a happy and fulfilling relationship.

Through our Meet&Match® process, we rehome hundreds of dogs every year.

While your dog is looking for a new home

Whether a dog is in one of our rehoming centres or on our Home from Home® scheme, they receive the same level of care, including health checks, vaccinations, microchipping and any treatments they might need. If your dog is on our Home from Home®, we still fully manage the adoption process, arranging meets at our rehoming centres or a mutually agreed neutral location, and ensuring that current owners and adopters do not need to be in direct contact.

If your dog comes into one of our rescue centres, we will give them all the love, care, and attention they need. We have over sixty years of experience caring for dogs of all breeds, shapes and sizes, and all decisions we make while your dog is with us will be made with their best interests at heart.

FAQs

It’s an emergency, can you take my dog now?

Whilst we do not have the resources to offer emergency boarding as a mainstream service, we always strive to provide support in desperate situations. We encourage you to contact your nearest centre directly to discuss your circumstances. Our dedicated teams will assess each case individually and do their utmost to assist you. Please complete our Emergency Boarding Enquiry Form and we’ll be in touch as soon as we can. 

I’ve rehomed my dog to you, can I have them back?

Please get in touch with us straight away if you’re having doubts about rehoming your dog. We’ll discuss your reasons for rehoming and help you decide what’s best.

Dog welfare is our highest priority and if we foresee difficulties, we’ll be honest and may not return your dog to you. When you rehome your dog, a legal document transfers ownership to us and we take our legal duty of care very seriously. Once adopted into a new home, legal ownership is then transferred to the dog’s new owners.

Can I visit my dog after giving them up?

We don’t have open kennels for viewing as this is detrimental to the welfare of the dogs in our care.

We also wouldn’t recommend visiting a dog once you have rehomed them. Seeing you could be very distressing and upsetting for you both. However, should you wish, we will welcome updating you on your dog whilst they are in our care. We understand how hard it will have been to come to this decision and we want to give you as much peace of mind as possible.

Will you tell me what happened to my dog?

Whilst your dog is in our care, you’re very welcome to get in touch with us to see how they’re doing.  We can also let you know that your dog has been adopted, if you wish.

However, once they have been rehomed, unfortunately we won’t be able to share the new owner(s) details. Whilst we can ask the new owner(s) if they are happy to provide us with updates which we can share with you, unfortunately we cannot promise it.
