Community Vet Support: Grant-Funded Care to Keep Dogs and Families Together

At some point in their lives, nearly all dogs will experience an injury, illness, or perhaps even a mischievous adventure that requires medical treatment.  

Sadly, there is no NHS for dogs, so a trip to the vets can often come with a hefty price tag. 

All too often, dog owners are confronted with the devastating choice of either rehoming their dog to rescue or making the heart-wrenching decision to put them to sleep because of financial constraints. 

Thanks to Petplan Charitable Trust, we’re able to provide limited veterinary support for dogs and owners in need. While we can’t promise support in every case, we’ll always do our best to help or signpost to someone who can.   

When Lady, a much-loved Cocker Spaniel, swallowed a sock, her owners were faced with an unimaginable decision. The sock had caused a blockage in Lady’s bowel, and without surgery it would have been fatal. Not being able to afford the full vet bills, Lady’s owners had a heartbreaking decision on their hands – either rehome their precious pooch to save her life or have her put to sleep.  

Lady’s owners contacted our team for help, desperate for support to help keep her. One thing was clear to our team; Lady was in a wonderful home where she was very much loved. Up until this freak accident, Lady was living a cherished life and rehoming her would not be in her best interest.  

We were able to contribute towards the cost of Lady’s surgery, allowing her to remain with her loving humans as she made a full recovery.  

Last year, we supported Milo, who was sadly involved in a road traffic accident, and his owner was struggling to fund the treatment he needed. Through our veterinary support scheme, we were able to contribute £150 which covered the cost of Milo’s consultation, allowing the vets to clear Milo’s wounds, and provide a course of antibiotics and painkillers.
