On 31st July we’re celebrating National Mutt Day (also known as National Mixed Breed Dog Day) which is a global campaign shining a spotlight on the thousands of mixed breed and crossbreed dogs waiting patiently in rescue centres across the UK.

A crossbreed (sometimes written as cross breed dog or known also as mixed breed dog) is a dog with parents from two or more different breeds. You may also hear the terms mutt or mongrel, particularly during National Mutt Day or in older publications. However, over the years these terms have become less commonly used in the UK as attitudes towards dogs and animal welfare have evolved. Some people feel that “mutt” and especially “mongrel” can carry negative connotations, so the use of the more neutral terms crossbreed or mixed breed dog are now more actively used to celebrate every dog’s individuality. 

While some crossbreeds are intentionally bred, many mixed breed dogs for adoption arrive in rescue through circumstances beyond their control, including accidental litters, changes in family circumstances, neglect or abandonment.
