Call – Return – Reward – it’s that simple!
When learning how to train dog recall, start by standing a short distance from your dog, say their name and use a cue word like “come” or “here”. Wait for your dog to return and then reward them straight away with a treat or toy, depending on what they prefer.
Once your dog is returning consistently, you can start to increase the distance between you and your dog. Try to make sure you are calling your dog while they are looking at you as they will be more likely to return while they are still improving their recall.
Some dogs will take longer to gain enough self-control to stop what they are doing and come back when called – and that’s okay! All dogs are unique, and some may need longer to understand what you are asking them to do
