Gilberdyke Newsletter September 2011

Happy Birthday to us! For Jerry Green Dog Rescue is 50 years young this year, and here at Gilberdyke we will be celebrating with a very special annual open day on September 18th. So come along and join us!

Special attractions include Howden Hounds Flyball Team (several former JG dogs are among their star performers) the impressive charity Canine Partners, whose beautifully trained dogs assist their disabled owners and love showing what they can do.  A late addition to the line-up Christine and Ralph Ellis and friends with their Newfoundlands, complete with their doggie carts, a real treat to see.

The Golden Anniversary theme includes a parade of our Golden Oldie dogs.  Everyone who comes along will have their chance to shine, too, with rosettes to seventh place in our fun dog show, goody bags for all entrants, and lots of special prizes for dogs and children.

There are classes for everyone - Best Pedigree, Best Puppy (Under 12 months) Waggiest tail, Prettiest Female, Handsomest Male, Mini-Me (dog and handler look-alike) Strangest Brace (most unlikely pair of dogs) Best Junior Handler (16 and Under) Fastest Sit, Best Sausage Catcher, Best Veteran (7 and Over) and Best Rescue - with special rosettes for Best, and Reserve Best In Show. Entries will be taken from 11am, show starting at 12 noon.

Stalls and attractions include cakes, bric a brac and books, refreshments, barbecue and a very special home made Doggy Delights stall. Our wonderful tombola and raffle also have some great prizes, and raffle tickets are now on sale.

This is our major fund raiser for the year, and we would love your help. Sponsorship, large or small for the show classes(all sponsors will be listed in our programme on the day), setting up for the open day, baking of cakes or dog treats would be lovely, as would donations for all stalls, including tombola, bric a brac and bottle stalls.  A big thank you to all the people who have supported us so far, your help is very much appreciated.

Contact the office (details below) and we will be happy to help you to help us! Thank you!

Meanwhile, dogs come and go. Terriers Alfie and Pip have gone to new homes, as have pup Titus and two Pekingese dogs Patsy and Gabby, they are all doing well.  News from former JG dogs include little Bailey (pictured above) – settling in well and making his presence felt, according to his new Dad, and Molly (formerly Roxy) happily walking 10 miles a day on holiday in Wales.

Visit our website ( to see dogs available if you are looking for a newcomer to join your family, but this month a special mention goes to pretty little blue Lurcher Lady (picture below), 15 months old, sweet and child friendly but very active.   Also Mac, a stunning Mallinois Belgium Shepherd. Mac is a very shy and nervous boy, a home with experience is needed for him – please contact the Centre for more details.

Call in any afternoon (except Wednesday) between 1.30 - 4pm.  We no longer give tours of the kennels, but introduce people to dogs on an individual basis.

We are also renewing our Meat and Treat Appeal. Supplies are desperately low of tinned dog meat, treats, and hot dog sausages, and we need them all. The tinned meat for dogs with special needs, the treats to brighten a doggie’s day, but also to use in our positive reward based training to help our dogs move on to new lives.

If you would like to help in any way, do get in touch. Our rescue dogs, all deserving a second chance in life, need all the help and support we can give them, and we are always grateful for donations of blankets and bedding, food and treats. New dog walkers are welcome, too.

To find out more, visit our website - click on Gilberdyke to see our available dogs - email or ring 01430 -449112. We are also on Facebook, so visit us there and share your Jerry Green dog stories - we look forward to hearing from you.
