Gilberdyke News April 2011

Golden oldies with a golden glow of happiness - that’s two of our old timers Buddy and Ash, who have gone to happy new homes at the ages of 12 and 15 respectively, despite the general idea that old dogs never learn new tricks and are a lot of trouble. Don’t believe it!

In Buddy’s case, a lovely couple came to Gilberdyke specifically looking for “an older dog, preferably male and scruffy!” Buddy (an eccentric but charming border terrier, brought into the centre after a child in his former family became allergic) fit the bill. After a few more visits to the centre, Lorraine packed Buddy’s bags and took him to new see if he liked his new home, he hasn’t looked back. (See photo of Buddy with Lorraine, ready to go, Pictured also is a photo of him later settled in).

We hear he is not only the best dog in the world, but also the best dog his new family say they have ever had.

And as for Ash, a lovely collie, she had a new lease of life after coming to Gilberdyke after her owner was taken ill and could n o longer care for her - she now lives with a family who have previously adopted three Jerry Green dogs, one of which was a 16 year old collie Badger who had been left tied to our gate.

Wonderful dogs and wonderful families for them, too. Thank you all for brightening our days!

We have also been rehoming puppies, and dogs of all ages and types in between, such as Labrador George, English setter Monty, Blue, Honey, Roxy and Molly.

If you love dogs but don’t have time in your lifestyle for one at the moment, have you ever considered sponsoring your own dog with us?  For just £5 a month you could support  either our big golden teddy of a dog, Mary - fussy but timid, and always overlooked for rehoming because of her size - or little Staffie cross Ren, too nervous to show himself off nicely to strangers, although sweet natured and affectionate. Contact us for more details.

Our three mile sponsored walk will take place, thank you to everyone for your help and support - results next newsletter. If you are not able to support this event, how about sponsoring kennel staff Rachel Sykes and Kelly Walmsley, who will be tackling the 26 mile Three Peaks Walk on June 4 to raise funds for JG. Again, contact the office for details.

Whilst putting dates in your diary, note that our annual open day will be on September 18th, which is a week earlier than normal this year. Our popular fun dog show, doggy dancing display, stalls and refreshments, will all be there as usual - Howden Hounds Flyball team will be coming too - they will feel at home because many of them are former JG dogs. In fact whippet,” Arthur”, is officially number 1 whippet in the country for points and awards for the BFA (British flyball association).

We would like to say a big thank you to the Howden Hounds, as rather than take payment for their demonstration at Howden show this year, they have asked for a stall for us. So Jerry Greens will be there Free of charge on 3th July to participate in the days events.

Flyball is fun agility for dogs, and exciting for humans. If you are interested contact Alison on 07835 649555; they meet in Asselby at 6.30pm on Thursdays evenings beginners and all breeds welcome.

Looking for a dog of your own? We have dogs of all types and sizes, and this month we are especially looking for a home for collie cross Mia, a sweet girl who needs to be the only pet in a quiet home. Check out our website,  Or visit us any afternoon (except Wednesday) between 1.30 - 4pm.We no longer give tours of the kennel blocks, but introduce people to dogs on an individual basis.

And a big thank you to everyone who donated furniture for our kennels - the dogs are loving the home-from-home feeling having a three piece suite and two armchairs makes - not forgetting the leather settee! Include the raw bone deliveries every week by our lovely generous local butchers. It all makes for a real dog’s life here at Gilberdyke!

In the office at Gilberdyke we have a doggy shop, with a stock sale of 30% off toys and leads at the moment - we also sell birthday cards and dog food, not forgetting our quality dog name tags. Come in and browse!
