Gilberdyke News July 2010

Life with dogs is just one long walkies - and after the success of the 15 mile sponsored walk - one mile for every year we have been at Bennettland Lane - which raised more than £1,400 for improvements here, staff members Rachel and Amanda kept their walking boots on and completed the Three Peaks Walk last month.

This annual highlight of the JG calendar, a challenging 26 miles up and down three mountains in twelve hours, was undertaken by several staff and supporters, as well as Gail from Broughton headquarters. Every blister counted, and sponsorship money is still coming in. Thanks to our brave walkers, and your financial support for all our needy dogs!

Thanks also to Glew’s Garage, who pledged to donate cash for each new car test drive undertaken by clients recently. This resulted in a very welcome £280 cheque. The time and commitment from everyone was much appreciated from this unusual event.

Everyone knows their dog is a pretty as a picture, so the pet portrait photographic day was very popular. Wendy Tomney of The Happy Dog Company took the lovely pictures, and also some wonderful shots of our difficult to rehome residents for a new ‘Sticky Dogs Corner‘display. Come and look - admire Wendy’s eye-catching work, and perhaps find yourself a new best friend! Special thanks to Wendy for all her hard work on a memorable day.

Dogs come and go all the time, and among those rehomed this month have been Tikko, Rosie, Missy (pictured bottom left)  Chuck, Stella, Marley, Max, Lloyd, Dennis (pictured top right) described by his new family as ’not much of a guard dog, but loved by all who meet him’and Willow. If you are looking for a dog, come and visit us - we have an ever changing family, and will find the best dog for you.

If you want a dog to join your family. Visit our dogs needing homes section on the website or come along - any day between 1.30 - 4pm except Wednesdays when closed for administration.

Always remember that once a Jerry Green dog, always a Jerry Green dog - so never feel alone with your dog. We are always delighted to hear from you, whether you have happy ever after tales or need help and advice. If we should be unable to help, we will recommend you to a kind and caring advisor.

Many visitors to Bennettland Lane will know Rosina Myers, who works here part time and is also a dog trainer and behaviorist. A new venture as of July 14, she will be running Beginner Obedience Classes these will run as six week courses on Wednesday evenings at the centre. There will be classes for puppies under seven months (fully vaccinated) Junior Dogs (8-18 months) and adults. Thank you, Rosie, for all the work you do for us - and good luck with the course! Ask at the kennels email or call/text 07506 131124 for more details or to book.

If you want to help us there are many ways to do so. Adopt a dog. Shop in reception for such items as dog collars and leads, name tags, birthday cards, second hand books. Join us as volunteer dog walker – two dog walkers have adopted dogs of there own in the past few weeks!

Donate used postage stamps (which we resell to raise money) old blankets and bath towels, for the rescue dogs to use. The current appeal is for treats, please! Dogs love them to brighten their day, and we also use them for our gentle reward based training - so your treats are not just an indulgence, but also do good! Such tasty treats as schmackos, or Bakers meaty chunks are ideal we also use cheese and tins of hotdog sausages, these are excellent for cutting into tiny pieces 1 tin of sausages can be divided up into as many as 200 treats per tin! The dogs love them - Not bad for an investment of about 40p!

With the holiday season in full flow now, you can also board your dog here to holiday with us. But book early - space is limited, and our kennels are popular!

And don’t forget our Open Day on September 26. There will be a fun dog show, the usual stalls and refreshments, and a doggy dancing display from Lesley Bugler of Angel Paws Dog Training and Behaviour and her team - so popular when appearing for the first time last year.

Ring 01430 449112 for any JG information, or email This is also the address to sign up to receive our newsletters by email, which is becoming increasingly popular.
