Importance of Identification

07/07/2011 14:41 - Nottinghamshire

Every week at the centre we have calls about people losing their dog, whether it's from letting the dog off the lead or the dog has escaped from the garden, circumstances arise and dogs go missing.

Unfortunately many of the dogs reported do not have any form of identification by either a microchip or an ID tag on the collar. An ID tag is required by law to be worn by a dog when in a public place but we also recommend you have ID on your dog at all times in the home due to dogs running out of doors and escaping out of gardens etc.

If a stray dog is found by a member of the public and identification is seen then the likelihood of the dog being returned is high. If there is no ID present your dog could end up with the dog warden and will result in a fine to release the dog back to the owner. ID tags can be purchased from most pet shops and can also be ordered via the Jerry Green, Blidworth Centre for £4.99. Please ensure your ID tags are kept updated especially if you change phone number and remember a full address is required not just a post code.

If your dog does go missing please remember to inform the Enviromental Health Department at your Local Council and phone round rescue centres', vets and police stations to give a description of your dog.
